“No need to write ‘inspired by the CM’ to please me”: Suvendu Adhikari to officials

Suvendu Adhikari on Monday instructed senior administrative officials in Nabanna to stop using phrases such as “under the inspiration of the Chief Minister” on government hoardings, advertisements and foundation plaques. During his first formal meeting with senior secretaries and top bureaucrats after assuming office as Chief Minister of West Bengal, he stated that the administration would focus on accountability and governance rather than promoting the image of any individual political leader.

Addressing officials, the Chief Minister said government projects and welfare schemes are funded through taxpayers’ money and not through the personal generosity of any political leader. He told the administration that officials working within the framework of rules and regulations should not fear anyone or attempt to please anyone. He also assured officials that the government would allow the administration to function independently and impartially.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister stressed financial discipline and transparency in public expenditure. He instructed officials to maintain accountability for every rupee of public money and directed departments to stop unnecessary celebrations and avoid wasteful expenditure. He further stated that government resources should instead be utilised for healthcare, education and implementation of central welfare schemes.

The meeting at Nabanna was attended by several senior officials, including the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, Director General of Police and the Commissioner of Kolkata Police. Discussions during the meeting focused on administrative functioning, governance priorities and coordination between departments under the new government.

The Chief Minister also stated that his administration aimed to remove administrative barriers between Delhi and Kolkata to ensure direct implementation of central welfare schemes for the people of the state. The statements were made during the government’s first high-level administrative meeting following the formation of the new administration in West Bengal.
